7/12 Roof Pitch Information
7/12 Roof Pitch 22½ Degrees
Also referred to as 7/12 roof slope, 7 on 12, 7 to 12, and 7/12 roof angle.
Roof pitch refers to the amount of rise a roof has compared to the horizontal measurement of the roof called the run. The picture below shows the pitch of a 7-12 roof slope meaning that for 12″ of horizontal measurement (roof run) the vertical measurement (roof rise) is 7″.
This metric is best performed on a bare roof since curled-up roofing shingles will interfere with your measurement. If this is not possible, take the same measurement on the underside of the roof. We’ve included a roof pitch chart and a calculator below the 7-12 example image.

A 30-degree roof slope 7/12 pitch is the right pitch to aerodynamically handle high wind. Steeper slopes increase the “sail effect” that makes them susceptible to wind. Lower slopes don’t handle wind-driven rain as well. The 30-degree, 7/12 roof recommendation is backed up by testing, according to the publication Science Daily.

However, most often a ratio of “pitch” (also fraction) is slang used for the (more useful) ‘slope’ (of rise over ‘run’) of just one side (half the span) of a dual pitched roof. This is the ‘slope’ of geometry, stairways and other construction disciplines, or the trigonometric arctangent function of its decimal …

The pitch of a roof determines the height of the ridge board that runs the length of the house. Carpenters measure roof pitch as inches of rise per 12-inches of run. A 1-in-12 roof pitch roof rises 1 inch for every 12 inches of run. Rafters are nailed to the ridge board and run down to overhang the exterior wall.
Did any of you change the pitch on your roof?

As you’ve already figured out, a 7/12 is dramatically different from a 12/12. You probably could have gone to a 10/12 without too much of a aesthetic difference, but the 7/12 is too low, IMO. We changed our primary roof pitch to 10/12 because at 12/12 it exceeded town height limits. But I had a draftsman draw it up to make sure it looked ok.
